Thistlecrack stole the show on Thursday. Like any serious punter, Colin Tizzard’s strapping staying chaser was my festival banker. I popped my wedge on the west country beast in November after I saw him hose up at Newbury, in November.
A marvellous name and a marvellous horse.
Elsewhere, after a controversial late switch from the gold cup, Vautour destroyed a decent grade one field in the unfashionable 2.5 mile Ryanair chase.
The Mullins, Walsh, Ricci bandwagon continued.
Today is the Gold Cup the blue riband race of the whole festival. The early races of the day are mere horderves to the 3.2 mile chase around Cheltenham. My money is on the magnificent Cue Card, also trained by Tizzard. However there is definite logic in backing Djakadam or one the Dons – Cossack or Polli – and there is certainly some each way value in the galloping grey Smad Place.
